Vance Comments on Pope Leo's Remarks Downplaying Tensions with Trump Administration

Vice President JD Vance posted on X on Saturday, responding to a Fox News report video of Pope Leo XIV downplaying tensions with the Trump administration. The pope added it was 'not in my interest at all' to engage in a debate with President Donald Trump and that he prefers to focus on preaching a message of peace.

He stated: 'Pope Leo preaches the gospel, as he should, and that will inevitably mean he offers his opinions on the moral issues of the day.

The President—and the entire administration—work to apply those moral principles in a messy world. The post came days after Vance criticized Pope Leo at a Turning Point USA event at Akins Ford Arena at the Classic Center in Athens, Georgia, on April 14, 2026. Vance, who is Catholic, met Pope Leo at the Vatican in 2025.

U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Doctrine stated that Pope Leo's comments were in line with Catholic teachings. Pope Leo delivered remarks in Cameroon criticizing those who 'manipulate religion' for political and military gain.

He said: 'Jesus told us, blessed are the peacemakers. Pope Leo answered journalists' questions during his flight from Yaounde, Cameroon, to Luanda, Angola, on April 18, 2026. He said on April 18, 2026, that his speech in question had been prepared weeks before any response from Trump.

Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana condemned President Trump’s attacks on Pope Leo XIV during a Fox News interview on Saturday. He added: 'I don’t always agree with him, but I think he wants a better world. He said: 'Why do we want to have a fight with the pope?

It’s a distraction. President Donald Trump posted an AI-generated image of himself as a Jesus-like figure last week, which he later removed. Pope Leo told reporters on Saturday that he had no intention of having a back-and-forth debate with Trump.

He stated he has 'no fear' of the Trump administration. Pope Leo XIV assumed the papacy last May. More than a fifth of the world's Catholics, some 288 million people, live in Africa, according to figures from 2024.

Pope Leo is on a tour of Africa including stops in 11 cities across four countries.
