Walmart reported nearly 41,000 active job openings and another 273,000 future roles as it highlighted 10 career pathways it said will remain in high demand. Business Insider reported that the company employs more than 2.1 million workers at more than 10,000 locations worldwide.
It graduated its 1,000th truck driver through an internal training program earlier this year, and more than 600 associates have completed training to become HVAC specialists, electricians or maintenance technicians.
More than 126,000 employees have finished courses through the company's online education portal. Truck drivers averaged more than $109,000 in the past year. Walmart laid off about 1,000 workers in its tech division in May.
Chief people officer Donna Morris said large employers have a responsibility to show optimism about their need for people. "The reality is we are a service-driven organization, which means we're going to have a lot of jobs always," Morris said. "We also believe that technology absolutely should serve people," she said.
The 10 pathways include advertising sales roles with base pay of $90,000 to $234,000, supply chain general manager positions at $116,000 to $351,000, and store manager jobs at $95,000 to $170,000. Facility services technicians earn $26 to $76 an hour. Morris said she was surprised by the cumulative training numbers.
"I should know that because I lead the function, but when you see quarter after quarter, you don't necessarily see it cumulatively," she said.
