Wes Streeting, a Labour Party member of Parliament and former health secretary, announced on Saturday his intention to challenge Prime Minister Keir Starmer for the party leadership. Streeting stated that voters had issued a warning in the May 7 local and regional elections, where the party suffered losses and Reform UK gained ground.

He said Labour risks becoming "the handmaidens of Nigel Farage and the breakup of the United Kingdom" unless it changes course.

Streeting, 43, grew up in public housing in London's East End. He attended Cambridge University, led the Cambridge student union, and served as president of the National Union of Students. He later worked for the LGBTQ+ organization Stonewall before entering local government and winning election to Parliament in 2015.

He served as a backbench lawmaker under former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn before being promoted after Keir Starmer became leader in 2020. Streeting was appointed health secretary and has cited his own experience with kidney cancer as motivation for improving the National Health Service.

U.S. ambassador, a role from which Mandelson was later removed. Streeting released emails showing limited contact with Mandelson and stated he was not a close friend. Streeting resigned from the Cabinet on Thursday after previously denying interest in replacing Starmer.

He is expected to face other potential challengers, including Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, if Burnham wins a seat in the House of Commons.
