Wreckage of 1952 Pan Am Flight Found 2,000 Feet Below Atlantic Off Puerto Rico

It sank within three minutes of impact in rough seas, resulting in 52 deaths despite the presence of flotation devices; 17 people survived with rescue support from the U.S. Coast Guard and Air Force. The aircraft was found broken into two sections with the Pan Am logo still visible.

The Air/Sea Heritage Foundation began the search in 2019 and conducted the seven-year investigation in partnership with the Discovery Channel and Deep Sea Vision, an Eco Minerals company. The team employed cutting-edge sonar technology and autonomous underwater vehicles. Josh Gates, host of the Discovery Channel series Expedition Unknown, described the find.

“Seeing the bright aluminum fuselage shining back at us from the ocean floor was a hugely emotional moment,” he told NBC’s Today show. Gates also linked the incident to later safety changes. “There was no demonstration of where the exits were, where the flotation devices are,” he said.

The crash prompted mandatory pre-flight safety briefings for passengers that included emergency procedure demonstrations. Discovery Channel plans to cover the discovery in an episode of Expedition Unknown later in 2026. Gates stated that the event improved aviation safety for subsequent generations.

“Every time you step onboard an airplane today, you are safer because of what happened to Clipper Endeavor and her passengers three quarters of a century ago,” he said.
