Yankees add Triple-A reliever to 40-man roster
The team added a 27-year-old right-handed reliever to its 40-man roster and immediately optioned him back to Triple-A. The move prevents the pitcher from opting out of his contract.

The New York Yankees added a Triple-A reliever to the 40-man roster on Saturday and immediately optioned him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The 27-year-old right-hander had exercised an opt-out clause in his contract. Adding him to the roster nullified that clause and kept him in the organization.
The reliever has posted a 1.99 ERA with 50 strikeouts in 40 2/3 innings this season. He has worked primarily in multi-inning relief appearances and has allowed a 1.156 WHIP.
Background The pitcher signed with the Yankees as a minor-league free agent in December after spending time in the Cleveland organization. He throws four pitches and relies on a sweeper to generate swings and misses. The Yankees are expected to seek bullpen upgrades before the trade deadline.
Three other pitchers on the 40-man roster are also currently assigned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Saturday’s game against the Dodgers was postponed, creating a split-admission doubleheader on Sunday. m. A starting pitcher threw 52 pitches over three innings in his first rehab outing on Friday.
He allowed two runs on five hits and is scheduled to pitch again in five days. An outfielder recovering from a calf strain has begun running but has not yet progressed to running the bases. He has not played since April 24.
