Knoxville Man Charged With Fentanyl Distribution and Firearm Possession

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Zachary L. Campbell, 33, of Knoxville, appeared in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee on May 15, 2026, after a federal grand jury returned an indictment charging him with possession with intent to distribute fentanyl and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

The indictment alleges Campbell possessed 4,486 kilograms of fentanyl and a Taurus G2 9mm pistol loaded with 11 rounds of ammunition. Court records show the quantities support distribution-level charges under 21 U.S.C. § 841(a)(1). The firearm count carries a mandatory minimum sentence of five years consecutive to any drug sentence under 18 U.S.C. § 924(c).

Federal penalties for the fentanyl charge range from five to 40 years in prison depending on prior record and exact weight. The case forms part of the Department of Justice’s broader initiative targeting fentanyl trafficking that has contributed to more than 70,000 overdose deaths nationwide in the most recent annual Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tally.

In eastern Tennessee the U.S. Attorney’s Office has filed similar paired drug-firearm indictments against 27 defendants since January 2025.

The charges shift Campbell’s status from suspect to defendant facing federal court deadlines. He must appear for arraignment within 14 days of the May 15 unsealing. A conviction on the § 924(c) count bars parole and requires the full consecutive term. Sentencing would follow U.S. Sentencing Guidelines that treat fentanyl quantity as the primary driver of base offense level.

Downstream, the indictment requires the U.S. Attorney’s Office to produce discovery within 30 days under local rules and triggers asset-forfeiture proceedings against any property tied to the trafficking. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives must trace the Taurus pistol’s chain of custody, a step that routinely uncovers straw purchases or out-of-state trafficking pathways feeding eastern Tennessee markets.

Probation officers will prepare a presentence report that incorporates any cooperation, directly affecting final sentence length.

This indictment follows a March 2026 Eastern District of Tennessee case in which a Knoxville defendant received 15 years after pleading guilty to identical paired charges involving 2.1 kilograms of fentanyl and two handguns. The Department of Justice has prioritized such prosecutions since the 2022 designation of fentanyl as a public-health emergency, with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Tennessee reporting 118 fentanyl-related convictions in fiscal year 2025.
